Note: I wouldn't be worth my salt as a translator if I couldn't give this catchiest of catchy songs a singable set of English lyrics, but luckily, the melody lends itself extremely well to English stress and syllable patterns (no doubt because Jake brought every ounce of steampunk DIY craftiness his slim body possesses to bear on writing Sakurai the most Missiony Mission song he's ever been given since "Sacrifice," which was in fact written by The Mission's Wayne Hussey and so basically is The Mission in disguise. If you don't know who The Mission are, go back to goth school.) Anyway, this translation is extra super-duper singable, so please, by all means, sing it. Sing the shit out of it. Before you die. Because (SPOILER ALERT!) you're going to die.

1) The word here, "suberidasu," can mean "to slide in" as in, to get one's feet wet or yes (how did you guess?) get other parts of oneself (and other people!!!!) wet as well...but it can also mean "to get started," as in get started on a project. I think Sakurai's trying to evoke a metaphor of life as an ocean that we slowly wade into.

2) Spelled with typical kanji, the word "kuruiyuku" would mean something like "descend into madness." However, here Sakurai changed the second kanji from the usual kanji (meaning "to go") with a more unusual kanji meaning "to die," with the connotation of a peaceful death as part of the natural course of things. Because (SPOILER ALERT!) we're all gonna die.

3) The word "love" is not actually written here in the lyric booklet, but on the recording (and during the live shows) Sakurai whispers "ai" here, so I thought I would put it into the translation.

4) "Natsukashii" literally just means "nostalgic," but I translated it here as "precious and lost" because in context it certainly seems that Sakurai is referring to love which, even if it isn't lost yet, soon will be. Because (SPOILER ALERT!) we're all gonna die!

5) The Japanese here reads, "ai no Mortal," which means something like "mortals are made of love." Those of you studying Japanese, take notes: this line does NOT mean "love is mortal," and it does NOT mean, "love makes us mortal." We're mortal no matter whether we love because (SPOILER ALERT!) we're all gonna die!
